TEAM OVERVIEW

Fueled by the crushing memory of how Cameroon denied them a trip to Qatar with a 124th-minute goal back in 2022, Algeria decided to leave nothing to fate this time around. Under Swiss tactician Vladimir Petković, the Desert Foxes dominated CAF qualifying with 25 points from 10 matches, sealing their ticket with a clinical 3-0 dismantling of Somalia. Les Fennecs’ marry technical sophistication with a passion for football that borders on obsession, thrilling neutral audiences with their attacking force while carrying the revolutionary spirit of a nation that refuses to be silenced.

Built On Brilliance

Algeria’s system of play is designed to unlock the incredible prowess of one player: all-time great Riyad Mahrez. Petković's fluid formational approach provides cover for Mahrez to abandon his position, drifting inside and dropping into the midfield to collect the ball before unleashing his devastating footwork. When successful the payoff looks like it did in qualifying against Somalia, when the captain delivered two clinical crosses that were converted by Mohamed Amoura while drilling in his own finish in between. And with Mahrez publicly stating that this will be his last World Cup, it may be your last chance to see the magic in person.

Theater of Resistance

Algeria’s visually stunning tifos bring a level of theatricality to the international stage, with 150-foot banners depicting the team as desert warriors and smoke bombs choking the air in national Algerian red and green. Thundering chants of “1, 2, 3 Viva l'Algérie” break the steady drone of traditional goblet drums and North African castanets. And underpinning it all is the reality that the Algerian national team has long been inextricably linked to independence and resistance, dating back to the formation of the renegade Front de Libération Nationale squad in 1958. So while ≈125k Algerians who call North America home may not be one of the larger African diaspora communities, you can bank on the fact that they’ll be among the most passionate.

A Maestro’s Farewell

At 35, Algerian captain Riyad Mahrez has already announced his intention to make 2026 his last world cup. Widely considered one of the greatest North African footballers of all time, his devastating left foot and otherworldly technique make him one of the world’s most watchable weapons. In fact his signature move, which involves faking a shot with his left foot before dribbling past hapless defenders, is so devastating that it was given its own codename (“la spéciale.”) If this is indeed to be the last dance for the undersized boy from Sarcelles who rose up to become England’s Player of the Year, then it’s sure to be one worth watching.

Playing for a Ghost

In April of 1958, nearly a dozen Algerian professional footballers playing in France's top division vanished overnight. Among them were Rachid Mekhloufi, a superstar for Saint-Étienne, and Mustapha Zitouni, a key defender for AS Monaco, both considered locks for the French national team. Abandoning careers, teammates, and families, these men formed the Front de Libération Nationale (FLN) football team, a politically motivated organization that toured the world playing under the banner of an Algeria that didn’t yet exist as an independent nation. When Mahrez & co take the field in North America, they’ll bear the legacy of this backstory and the hopes of fans who view soccer as an instrumental agent of political progress.
