Belgium Team Overview

TEAM OVERVIEW

Belgium heads to North America as a team forged in the crucible of turmoil, forced to reinvent themselves despite having held a top 10 FIFA international ranking for over a decade. Domenico Tedesco’s conflict-tinged run lasted less than two years, and in his wake arrived former Napoli helmsman Rudi Garcia, whose first order of business was managing a casual two-legged playoff against Ukraine to avoid Nations League relegation. With that taken care of (barely, we might add), the Red Devils proceeded to dominate Group J in World Cup qualifying, tallying 29 goals en route to an undefeated campaign. But this is a team still prone to lapses in quality, and a listless 1-1 draw with Kazakhstan in November seemed poised to light a fuse in the locker room before a 7-0 demolition of Liechtenstein in their final match secured qualification. Given the elite talent and frustrating recent history, the safest bet with Belgium in 2026 is that there will be fireworks; the only question is whether they’ll be on the field or off of it.

Belgium Style of Play

A New Day

While Tedesco managed to instill a solid defensive base, the squad’s abysmal track record in 2024 belied a stunning inability to manufacture goals. Garcia’s preferred brand of football generates offense through possession, building patiently at the midfield and leveraging De Bruyne’s elite vision to unlock Jérémy Doku’s pace and Lokaku’s physicality. The result during qualification was an absolute goal-generating machine, as the Red Devils tallied 29 scores across Group J play. But a preference for high pressing has also exposed the defense at times, putting pressure on all-world keeper Thibaut Courtois to bail out the team while the offense hunts. The end result is a team capable of dismantling lesser opponents through beautifully orchestrated long balls while also collapsing when pressure begins to mount. Either way, it’s good theater.

Highway to Hell

Belgian supporters punch above their weight through sheer organization. The official 1895 fan club (named for the year Belgian football was founded) has been known to to curate bus and rail caravans to away matches across Europe, transforming mandatory transit into pre-match parties aboard the “Red Devils Express”. And with Brussels Airlines having offered discounted travel to 1895 club members during previous World Cups, don’t be surprised if you step into your hotel and find yourself staring at a wall of red. Despite their satanic nickname and devil horn hats, Belgian fans are well known for their friendly affect; just grab a Chimay, throw your arm around the closest Walloon and shout out “Waar is dat feestje?”, because “that party” is most certainly right here.

The Big Three

At 34, Kevin De Bruyne has been forced to evolve from a box-to-box terror into one of the game's ultimate orchestrators. Still the solar system around which the team orbits, he’s tailored his approach to maximize his stamina and tee up Belgium’s aggressive front line through elite vision and ball placement. His golden generation cohorts, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois, round out the team’s spine, but a deep run will likely require Jérémy Doku to fully take on the creative burden left in the wake of Eddie Hazard’s retirement. The 23 year old Manchester City winger has the pace, physicality and explosive dribbling skills to do so, but with only a substitute appearance in 2022 he’ll be accruing his experience on the fly.

Under Pressure

When Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku’s golden generation delivered a third-place finish in 2018, it kicked off a three-year stretch during which the side sat at the top of FIFA’s international rankings and seemed all but ordained to capture serious international hardware. But a Group Stage exit in 2022 presaged a painful downward drift, capped off by a disastrous 2024 in which the Red Devils claimed just 4 out of 14 matches. As the pressure mounted, fissures in the locker room began bursting into the public eye, culminating in the acrimonious departure of perhaps the planet’s best goalie in Thibaut Courtois. And while their all-world stopper has since returned (though only after the sacking of Domenico Tedesco), what hasn’t changed is that Belgium is still the only nation to have held FIFA’s number one ranking and never won a single major international tournament. Now, an aging cast of superstars is being asked to adopt a new system while integrating the next generation of talent for what’s likely their last rodeo. Based on the past few years, our magic eight ball says to bring your popcorn.
