TEAM OVERVIEW

Be honest: if you were drafting a 2026 World Cup bingo card last year, would you have tabbed a spot for Cape Verde? At 525,000 people, the nation is less populous than every World Cup host city. Their squad is more “silver haired” than “golden generation", with an average starting XI age of nearly 30. Heck, one of their key players ignored his first national team call-up for nine months because it came via LinkedIn and he couldn’t read Portuguese. But manager Pedro "Bubista" Brito brought a collection of far-flung journeymen home and orchestrated the greatest underdog story in African qualifying, toppling eight-time qualifiers Cameroon to win Group D. And yes, recent AFCON knockout appearances proved they could compete, but booking the nation’s first-ever spot at the World Cup qualifies as an overperformance of the highest order. The only question left is whether they have more Hollywood magic in them come tourney time.

A Dribbling Deluge

The Blue Sharks’ performance throughout qualifying (zero goals conceded across five home matches) suggests a focused, defensively-minded team. Bubista prefers his side sit deep and absorb pressure, creating a fortress that even Cameroon couldn't crack. But unlike other teams who operate defensively out of necessity, Cape Verde doesn’t just park the bus: at AFCON they attempted 95 dribbles, more than any other side. That’s a freedom rarely given to similarly positioned squads, but their 46.3% success rate suggests that they value the threat that dribbling creates as much as the outcome itself. And don’t forget Bebé's 40-yard thunderbolt against Mozambique, proof that a Cape Verde match can produce viral moments just as easily as it can underdog empathy.

More morabeza, please

Perhaps we should all be so lucky as to live on an island, because Cape Verdeans appear to have a particularly glass-half-full approach to life. After all, their unofficial national saying is literally “no stress”. And while the intensity of World Cup soccer may put that motto to the test, fans of the Blue Sharks will hopefully bring with them their unique culture of “morabeza”, which is built on enthusiastically welcoming others and gratitude for the little things in life. Just don’t be fooled into thinking fans will smelling the roses instead of watching the game: this is still a country in which fans stayed at the stadium for hours after witnessing their nation qualify for the World Cup by beating Eswatini, and the president gave the entire nation the day off so they could tune in.

Somebody call Disney

The Blue Sharks’ roster hits all the notes of a Hollywood sports script. The burned out hotshot finding redemption? That would be Tiago "Bebé" Correia, the 34-year-old winger who famously flopped at Manchester United after Alex Ferguson paid £7 million for someone he'd never seen play. The stalwart who’s still producing his twilight approaches? See Ryan Mendes, the 35-year-old team captain with over 80 caps and the country’s all-time goal record. Still, the best story belongs to Roberto “Pico” Lopes, a mortgage lender in Dublin who ignored a LinkedIn message from then-coach Rui Águas for nine months because it was in Portuguese. A fateful decision to run the message through Google Translate led to his international debut at the ripe age of 27, and a storybook arc from “neglecting” his Cape Verdean heritage to captaining their national team.

So... now what?

Cape Verde arrives at their first World Cup asking a question few expected them to face: what comes after qualification? As the second-smallest country to ever qualify for the World Cup, comparisons to Iceland and their 2018 appearance are inevitable. As you might recall, that squad managed to hold Argentina to a 1-1 draw in their first Group stage game, providing captivating football and proving their mettle despite ultimately finishing last in their group. The odds are similarly stacked against Cape Verde, but Bubista set the bar higher than mere qualification when he said “we have earned respect in Africa, now we must earn respect in the world."
