TEAM OVERVIEW

Egypt qualified for the 2026 World Cup in dominant fashion, finishing unbeaten across 10 matches in CAF Group A with just 2 goals conceded. But for 2026 to be considered a success, they’ll need to do something no other Egyptian team has accomplished in the 92 years since their first World Cup: win a match. Under manager Hossam Hassan The Pharaohs have lived up to their continental pedigree, which includes seven African championships. And Mohamed Salah, still the world’s best winger at 33, scored nine goals en route to becoming Africa's all-time leading qualifier scorer. But Omar Marmoush's £59 million January 2025 transfer to Manchester City announced that Egypt's attack isn't a one-man show anymore.

From Fortress to Fireworks

Hassan's tactical evolution has transformed Egypt into an intense, high-pressing outfit that explodes on the counter-attack and is willing to adapt formations, even deploying a decidedly uncommon 3-6-1 (as they did against Djibouti.) The Pharaohs absorbed pressure with ease during qualification, turning in 8 clean sheets and conceding just 2 goals across ten games. In turn, their defensive fortitude allows their all-world wingers to operate with devastating efficiency in transition. It all comes together to create the kind of chaotic, end-to-end football destined to produce unforgettable World Cup moments. Having one of the consensus Top 10 players in the world roaming the pitch doesn’t hurt watchability, either.

Life On The Line?

To understand Egypt’s passion for football one need look no further than the iconic ultras’ chant “Min talta shemal”. A tribute to the “third-class stands” populated by die-hard supporters, the lyrics roughly translate to “a great team, a great team. I would give them my life, and it’s still too little.” While the sagacity of dying for your favorite soccer team may be up for debate, the fervor that will be on display as fans from North Africa’s most populous country (as well as hundreds of thousands of expats living in North America) stream into stadiums for the World Cup is decidedly not.

The King and His Heir

Mohamed Salah enters what's likely his final World Cup at 34, coming off a record-breaking 2024/25 Liverpool season that featured 29 goals and 18 assists across just 38 appearances and earned him a third PFA Player of the Year award. The Egyptian King's nine qualifying strikes made him Africa's all-time leading World Cup qualifier scorer and extended his international tally to 61 goals, seven shy of Egypt’s all-time record. His possible farewell tour only gains extra firepower from the presence of Omar Marmoush, Manchester City’s £59 million transfer who represents the next generation of Egyptian offensive prowess.

Breaking the Curse

The timeline isn’t kind: 92 years since their first World Cup appearance (the first of any African nation, actually) and Egypt still has a grand total of zero victories. This is a proud footballing nation whose hardware case includes a record seven African championships, and yet fans have had to look on with envy as their rivals have exceeded them on the world stage. Still, and despite the sting, Morocco's 2022 semifinal run provides proof that Africa’s top teams can hang in elimination. And Egypt qualified with authority, remaining unbeaten through 10 matches while conceding just 2 goals. With Salah still operating at peak form at an age when most wingers begin their gradual decline, 2026 has gifted The Pharaohs an opportunity to bridge the gap to Marmoush and deliver what no other team could. The only question is whether they can take advantage.
