TEAM OVERVIEW

Les Bleus have made the World Cup finals four times and taken home the trophy twice since 1998, making them the most dominant footballing nation over the past three decades. Currently ranked #3 in the world and riding the crest of a dominant qualifying (4 wins and 1 draw to top their group), the expectations heading into 2026 are understandably nothing less than another trophy. But this isn’t the same team that put on an all-time classic against Messi and Argentina four years ago. Putting aside the fractious end to Karim Benzema’s tenure during the 2022 window, France has lost a whopping 512 caps of experience across just four retired players since that battle for the ages. What remains is elite defensive talent entering its peak and a void where proven creative orchestrators used to roam (plus captain Kylian Mbappé’s strained relationship with both federation and fans.) Toss in the fact that this will be Didier Deschamps final tournament and the storylines surrounding France start to feel as robust as a Côte-Rôtie Syrah (mandatory oenophile humor!)

Possession Tactics

Any match featuring France is guaranteed to have a marquee shine to it, but don’t just expect 90 minutes of non-stop fireworks. After all, they managed to make the semis during the 2024 Euros without scoring a single goal from open play (two own-goals and a penalty). Les Bleus absolutely have the talent to dominate matches (which they may well do against lesser sides), but in high stakes matches at major tournaments they can drop into the red on possession. That’s because they actively weaponize the act of not controlling the ball, daring quality opponents to break them down while opening up windows for swift and brutal retaliation. Anyone who witnessed Mbappé’s hat trick against Argentina in the 2022 Final knows the kind of attacking talent that France possesses, but this is a team most appreciated by those who relish when the best in the world execute a suffocating gameplan at the highest level.

Tricolor Takeover

This is where beautiful football meets beautiful celebration. French supporters turn venues into extensions of the Champs-Élysées, where "Allez les Bleus!" echoes with enough passion to bring down the Arc de Triomphe. Tricolor flares may not paint the stands red, white and blue with every goal thanks to FIFA’s ban on them (which, we get it, safety), but the roaring sound of “La Marseillaise” (France’s national anthem) intercut with ‘I Will Survive” (French supporters’ national anthem) can’t be confiscated at the gate. And with more than one in five Canadians calling French their mother tongue, support for the squad may get a hometown boost whenever The Reds aren’t involved.

Excellence Exodus

Kylian Mbappé remains one of the world’s greatest footballers and Les Bleus' most dangerous weapon, but his path to 2026 has been anything but smooth. Opting out of multiple games due to injury ailments, the Real Madrid superstar has lost the goodwill of the French public despite his worldbeating form. While France may be one of the few teams who could lose a superstar of Mbappé’s magnitude and still have the talent to be a top 5 team, they’re still trying to replace holes left by the retirement of 3 of the teams top 4 most capped players of all time (Hugo Lloris, Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann). Add in Raphaël Varane and you can see how even a team as mighty as this one could struggle to maintain their historic excellence.

Didier's Destiny

This World Cup marks the end of an era, as Didier Deschamps plans to step down after 14 years as France's most successful coach. With 111 total wins and the 2018 title under his belt, a trophy in 2026 would cement his place on the Mount Rushmore of international footballers. To wit, he would be one of only two individuals to manage two World Cup winning sides (the other was Vittorio Pozzo in ‘34 and ‘38) and join Pelé as the only other person to claim three World Cup titles total. While heir apparent Zinedine Zidane would bring an impeccable resume along with him (three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga titles is nothing to sneeze at), the last act of possibly the greatest coach in history will vie for center stage in North America.
