TEAM OVERVIEW
Ghana secured their 2026 World Cup berth by topping qualifying with 25 points, despite the embarrassment of missing AFCON 2025 for the first time in two decades. As their creative talisman, Tottenham's Mohammed Kudus leads the squad onto the home turf of their frequent World Cup sparring partner in the USMNT. Those who remember the aughts will recall that Ghana eliminated the USA from not one but two World Cups (2006, 2010), with both meetings ending as 2-1 classics. The US secured some redemption when they defeated Ghana by the same score in 2014 to move on to the Round of 16, but Ghana would love nothing more than to turn back the hands of time and recapture their 2010 quarterfinal form on North American soil.
Two Eights, All Attack
Under Otto Addo's ambitious system, Ghana has attempted to forgo the traditional #10 role entirely, instead deploying “double attacking 8s” (aka midfielders) who surge forward to flood the penalty area with up to six attacking players. Such a commitment to attacking football creates constant goal-scoring opportunities while leaving Ghana vulnerable to transitions, ensuring unpredictable entertainment regardless of the opponent. Ghana displayed compact defending and clinical transition, but late-game vulnerabilities reared their ugly head when Chad equalized in the 90th minute of their qualifying match, exposing the same fragility that plagued their doomed AFCON campaign.
Jama Session
Ghana supporters transform stadiums into vibrant cultural festivals through "jama", traditional cheer songs sung in local languages accompanied by djembe drums, agogo bells, and sometimes bursts of Azonto dancing. The tradition is so embedded that former captain Asamoah Gyan even led a jama session during training ahead of the March 2025 qualification window, with head coach Otto Addo getting in on the fun. The bold patterns of Kente cloth add visual spectacle, and with one of Africa’s most dedicated traveling fan bases likely to join the 178k Ghanaians currently living in the US, you can bet the celebrations will make their way to North America come tournament time.
Kudos to Kudus
Mohammed Kudus is Ghana's undisputed star, coming off a £55 million transfer from West Ham to Tottenham. The 25-year-old two-time Ghana Player of the Year scored the qualification-clinching goal against Comoros in October, cementing his role as the Black Stars' creative heartbeat. Having led the Premier League in successful dribbles by a whopping 42% during the ‘23/’24 season, his all-world abilities makes him absolutely electric in transition. Supporting him is Antoine Semenyo, whose 11 Premier League goals for Bournemouth in 2024-25 have him linked to Manchester United, Liverpool, and Real Madrid, while captain Jordan Ayew provides veteran leadership (115+ caps) and hat-trick heroics to boot.
The Handball That Haunts
Ghana's 2026 campaign represents a rapid redemption arc, from failing to qualify for AFCON 2025 to clinching their spot in the World Cup on North American soil. But the Black Stars have their own World Cup demons to deal with. Back in 2010, during a stone cold classic quarter final matchup against Uruguay, Ghana was furiously attacking the net from close range in the final minute of extra time. In what can best be described as a brief stretch of total insanity, Dominic Adiyiah’s go-ahead header was crossing the plane when habitual villain Luis Suarez intentionally committed a handball foul. Suarez was shown a red card, but Ghana failed to convert the penalty kick and went on to lose in the shoot out. Since almost crashing the semis that year, Ghana has twice exited during Group play and failed to even qualify for 2018.
