TEAM OVERVIEW

Les Grenadiers are back on the world stage for the first time since 1974, and their return is nothing short of a miracle. Haiti qualified for 2026 without playing a single match on home soil, forced into exile by instability in Port-au-Prince and taking their "home" games 500 miles away to Curaçao. Their coach literally never set foot in the country. Yet in the face of chaos they found clarity. Haiti stormed through qualifying, clinching their spot on the anniversary of the decisive battle during the nation’s war for independence. Les Grenadiers are a soccer team, but also a symbol of hope for a nation.

Grit and Grind

Haiti qualified on organizational grit, not pretty football. And for a team stocked with players from across the globe and no home base, that’s probably just as well. Coach Sébastien Migné has been flexible enough to make tactical shifts mid-match, but his preference has been for a low-blocking formation that cedes possession and sets up speedy runs and aerial set pieces. With 6’4” striker Frantzdy Pierrot in the mix, that’s an approach they can afford to take and one that could reap rewards come crunch time.

Rara Rah Rah

“Rara” is many things: a season, a festival, a type of dance, a form of protest and a religious ritual, just to name a few. It’s also music built around the traditional vaksin, a bamboo horn that plays only one note, requiring multiple players to form a melody. Add in Konè (a metal trumpet) and a wall of pulsing percussion and you have the ninety-plus minute soundtrack to a Haiti match. On the evening Haiti qualified, scores of fans took to the streets across the island and danced to the very same music, hopeful that 2026 will bring more reasons to celebrate.

Duckens Delivers

Known as "The Tank”, 6'4" AEK Athens striker Frantzdy Pierrot is a nightmare for defenders and megalophobics alike. He combines old-school physicality with Champions League experience, acting as the target man who allows Haiti’s faster players to thrive around him. His tap-in against Costa Rica during qualifying was more finesse than physicality, but it delivered a crucial 1-0 victory nonetheless. Meanwhile, it’s the awesomely named Duckens Nazon who chases history in the form of Emmanuel Sanon’s all-time scoring record, a quest he advanced during qualifiers by leading the CONCACAF scoring charts with 6 goals in 10 games. Notching a hat trick during a critical qualifying matchup against Costa Rica, he’s both the emotional and attacking heartbeat of the team.

Building Blind

In an era of high-tech analytics and luxury training camps, Haiti’s success story is defined by a manager who has never set foot in the country he represents. Frenchman Sébastien Migné took the job in March 2024, knowing that security risks made travel to Haiti impossible. Unable to attend domestic league matches to observe players in person, he instead operated as a "Zoom manager," building his squad through video calls, remote scouting and extensive efforts to attract diaspora talent. According to Migné himself, “It's not the most attractive contract I've ever had, but it's unquestionably the most exhilarating assignment”. We’ll go head and flag experiencing the exhilaration of a Haiti game at the World Cup as plenty attractive on its own.
