TEAM OVERVIEW
International football’s uncrowned kings arrive in North America with a Euro 2024 semifinal appearance and an unbeaten run through Group G in qualifying as evidence of their form. But the reality is that the Oranje have spent the past 50-plus years perfecting the art of heartbreak on football’s biggest stage. Three times they’ve reached the World Cup final and three times they’ve fallen agonizingly short (and that’s to say nothing of their record for most semi-final defeats without lifting the trophy.) Ronald Koeman’s side has traded the fluidity of traditional “totaalvoetbal” (total football) for defensive impermeability, a transition enabled by an embarrassment of riches in the guise of Premier League defenders on the roster. But playing for penalties usually isn’t a trophy-securing approach, and they’ll need to manufacture consistent offense if they want to exorcise their ghosts.
Oranje Reborn
Forget the sacred Dutch 4-3-3. With a murderer’s row of defensive options that includes Van Dijk, Aké, Van de Ven, Timber and De Ligt, sticking with tradition would have meant sitting some of the Netherland’s top talent. Instead, Koeman deploys a "box midfield" that typically draws a defender up when in possession, overloading the center of the pitch and trapping opponents while limiting transition opportunities. It’s a pragmatic machine that trades the romanticism of Total Football for suffocating control, and forces opponents to penetrate a congested midfield only to run straight into a brick wall of world-class defenders, effectively making the Dutch one of the hardest teams in international football to break down.
The Links Rechts Effect
If you see a double-decker bus followed by 50,000 people wearing orange, you haven't stumbled upon the world’s largest jail break (unless you have, in which case…run!). No, more likely you’ve run across the Orange Legion, whose iconic party vehicles and epic “fan walk” tradition help fuel a well-earned reputation for creating an infectious, carnival-like atmosphere come game day. Their viral "Links Rechts" dance (based on music performed by the perfectly named Dutch act Snollebollekes) gets entire stadiums leaping from left to right in perfect unison, and supporters have been known to literally turn whole neighborhoods orange. The good news is that all of that spectacle comes with a heaping side of positivity and inclusion. The Legion are known to welcome opposing fans into their parades and fan zones, an infectious energy that has made them a fascination within global soccer of late.
Gakpo a Go Go
Virgil van Dijk and Frankie de Jong are names everyone knows, but the Oranje are a squad peppered with talented players. Liverpool's Cody Gakpo has emerged as perhaps Netherlands' most versatile weapon, capable of terrorizing defenses from wide positions or through the middle with his pace and clinical finishing. At just 26, he's already become a focal point of Koeman's fluid front line, and his ability to drift between positions makes him nearly impossible to mark consistently. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Xavi Simons began his career as a teenage internet sensation before morphing into the chaotic heartbeat of the Dutch attack. Deadly in the half-spaces, he still flashes the flair and risk-taking that gained him millions of followers almost a decade ago.
Familiar Faces
For the first time in history, the World Cup will feature a kingdom derby of sorts. The surprise qualification of Curaçao, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the smallest nation to ever make the tournament, has created the possibility that these two deeply intertwined squads could meet one another come tourney time. Managed by Dutch coaching legend Dick Advocaat and stocked with Dutch-born players who wanted to represent their ancestral nation, Curaçao is like a distinctly Caribbean "second Oranje." Whether Dutch fans will adopt the island nation as their favorite underdog at the tournament remains to be seen, but bragging rights at the dinner table are definitely on the line should these two cross paths.
