TEAM OVERVIEW
With only two previous qualifications (1982, 2010), New Zealand isn’t long on tourney experience. But in drawing all three of their group stage matches last time around (including against Italy) they proved to have the grit and determination to compete on soccer’s biggest stage. Now, they’re looking to go one better and earn their first-ever victory at a World Cup.
All (Whites) for One, One for All
New Zealand plays a traditional brand of football, focusing on possession and running a standard 4-3-3 formation in most situations. An All Whites victory will almost certainly be the result of cohesive execution rather than individual brilliance, fitting for a team whose coaching staff empowers players to inform gameday strategy..
Join the Chorus
While modest in number when compared to global powerhouses, New Zealand fans leave a mark on match day thanks to their signature humor. Dressed in head-to-toe white, fans have been known to distribute sheet music before matches, allowing the uninitiated to join in belting out “We’ve got sheep, more sheep, and the All Whites!”.
The Kiwi King
Chris Wood has become New Zealand’s greatest football export, dominating the Premier League with 20 goals in the 24/25 season for Nottingham Forest. At 33, he's rewriting what's possible for a Kiwi striker, and 2026 should see him become the first New Zealand player ever to appear in two World Cups.
Oceania Obliteration
With the expanded 48-team format making room for Oceania’s first-ever direct qualification spot, New Zealand dominated regional qualifiers to the tune of scoring 32 goals while ceding a single score across six games. With a world ranking of 82, though, they’ll be firmly in the underdog seat as they seek their first-ever tournament victory.
