TEAM OVERVIEW

Say hello to Panama’s "platinum generation". After the heartbreak of missing out in 2014 and the joy of a debut in 2018, the team has found consistency, reaching the finals of both the Nations League and the Gold Cup in recent years. Led by Spanish-Danish coach Thomas Christiansen and a core of players now featuring in top leagues across the Americas and Europe, Los Canaleros have climbed 51 spots in FIFA’s rankings and breezed through World Cup qualification with an unbeaten record. They also sport a three match win streak against the USMNT in tournament play, most recently sending the three-time champs packing at the 2025 Nations League tourney. Given that backdrop, they’ll arrive at the World Cup not as tourists but as a disciplined, battle-tested squad expecting to ruffle a few feathers in the group stage.

From Bunker to Blitz

Forget the defensive "park the bus" tactics of the past; this is a new, high-octane Panama. Coach Thomas Christiansen has installed a European-style possession game that’s fluid in formation and devastating on the counter. Capable of frustrating opponents with long spells of passing before launching rapid switches to their athletic wing-backs, it’s a bold, high-risk system that blends technical precision and pure adrenaline. Whether they’ll be able to apply this style against world-class opposition remains to be seen, but perhaps what truly separates Panama within CONCACAF is stability. Christiansen is the only head coach remaining from the 2021-22 qualifying cycle, while the USA, Mexico and Canada have burned through 12 managers combined. That continuity has crystallized a compelling identity: build fearlessly, press hard and strike when you smell blood.

The Murga Marches On

If you think you know atmosphere, just wait until you hear the murga. Panama matches are driven by a full brass and percussion orchestra that never stops playing, creating an organic soundtrack of trumpets and drums that froths a stadium’s energy for ninety-plus minutes straight. And based on recent history, you can expect that energy and excitement to run through Panamanian fans regardless of the score. During the 2018 World Cup, Los Canaleros were trailing England 6-0 in the 78th minute when Felipe Baloy netted their first goal, causing the stadium to erupt. Fans cheered, cried and hugged one another because their nation had finally arrived. While they may no longer be the wide-eyed debutantes of eight years ago, their passion for the side has only grown.

Tempo and Teeth

Adalberto "Coco" Carrasquilla isn't just a midfielder; he’s the brain of this Panamanian side. The 2023 Gold Cup MVP and Panama’s first CONCACAF Player of the Year (in 2024), his ability to control tempo and deliver in clutch moments will be vital to Panama’s hopes during the tournament. But don’t spend too long with your eyes off the right flank, because that’s where Marseille’s Michael Amir Murillo lurks. Blessed with both speed and physicality, it’s not uncommon to see him arriving late in the box to deliver a crucial goal from his right-back spot. And then there's José Fajardo, the 31-year-old striker who’s making a habit of scoring goals that cripple campaigns (just ask the USA or Guatemala). When the clock hits 75 minutes and the match is tight, he’s the man to mark.

Fairytale Ending?

For years, Panama was the "cenicienta" (or cinderella) of the region, but those days are over. During the past half-decade, Los Canaleros have ditched that particular fairytale mold and adopted another: killers of giants. After knocking the United States out of the 2023 Gold Cup semifinals and beating them again at the 2024 Copa América, this is a squad ready to show the rest of the world just how far they’ve come, and they have the chops to pull it off. And if having nearly a quarter-million Panamanians currently call North America home wasn’t enough, it’s possible that the Canal Men get a major boost of support from their neighbors, as no other Central American team can qualify for the tournament. Of course it’s also possible that bitter rivalries and schadenfreude win out, but that should be no less entertaining to see blossom come match day.
