TEAM OVERVIEW

Portugal arrives in North America not merely as a contender, but as a verified heavyweight that took down Spain to capture the 2025 Nations League Final. November’s final qualification window wasn’t without its challenges, as they drew against Hungary before suffering a shocking 2-0 setback to Ireland (a match in which they also lost Ronaldo to a red card.) But A Seleção didn’t need their talisman to rise to the occasion when it mattered most, throttling Armenia 9-1 to capture their spot at the big dance. Roberto Martínez has shed the defensive pragmatism of old for a ruthless, high-octane identity and has assembled a squad with enough depth to be the envy of world football, positioning Portugal to finally challenge for their first-ever World Cup title.

On the Attack

Forget the Fernando Santos era of "hard to beat" football: Martínez has rebuilt Portugal into an attacking machine. In scoring 36 goals and conceding only two during a ten-game Euros 2024 qualifying stretch, they managed to deliver the most prolific campaign in the country’s history. Their pressing is among Europe’s most aggressive and stems from a markedly fluid approach to shape, flooding specific zones and forcing opponents into mistakes. Perhaps the biggest strategic question mark surrounds the impact of Ronaldo himself: while his aerial ability and finishing instincts remain elite, Martinez’s system is built to reduce reliance on his creativity or defense, a trade off that will be tested on the world’s biggest stage.

Saudade Meets Soccer

You'll hear it before you see it: a single drum, almost human-sized, pounded with the rhythm of a jet engine. Then another. Then "A Portuguesa", the national anthem about heroes of the sea and a brave, immortal nation, sung by the thousands who traveled from Lisbon, from Paris, and from Toronto's "Portugal Village”. This is the embodiment of “saudade”, an untranslatable, uniquely Portuguese ache of longing that defines their culture and runs through their footballing history. When Ronaldo broke down crying after his missed penalty against Slovenia at Euro 2024, every Portuguese fan understood immediately. And in 2026, you can too.

El Bichu's Last Ride

At 41, Ronaldo arrives with 226 caps and 143 international goals, both all-time records. And in scoring 25 in his last 30 appearances, he's proven that you count him out at your own peril. Yet the future is here. João Neves, the 21-year-old PSG midfielder, is already a cultural icon and has a €60 million transfer from Benfica under his belt. And Nuno Mendes, 23, was named Nations League Player of the Finals after pocketing Spain's Lamine Yamal in the final (no wonder Martinez called him "the best left-back in the world.") This new generation of stars and stars-in-waiting will have to be at their best if they’re to help Ronaldo capture the one trophy that’s eluded him during his career.

In Memoriam

Martínez has overseen a tactical renaissance, leading Portugal to their record second 2025 Nations League triumph. Beating European champions Spain in the final proved that this team can dominate with both flair and structure. His philosophy of tactical flexibility over rigid systems has unlocked a generation of talent that no longer relies on individual magic but plays as a genuinely world-class collective unit. The 2026 campaign is driven by a profound and tragic sense of purpose following the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in July 2025. A calf injury against Manchester City in October 2022 stole Qatar from him, but he was 25, and there would be more chances. The loss was particularly stark given that Jota had married his high school sweetheart less than two weeks prior and won the Nation’s League in his last international game. Even Andy Robertson admitted when his Scotland side qualified that he had broken down in tears remembering conversations with his Liverpool teammate about their hopes and dreams for 2026. Win, lose or draw, Jota will be on everyone’s mind during the tournament.
