The Game Plan

Welcome to Chivas country, the birthplace of mariachi and tequila and home of some of Mexico’s most wildly nationalist (in a good way!) soccer fanatics. Estadio Akron’s home team, C.D. Guadalajara, implemented an all-Mexican roster policy due to fan demand nearly 80 years ago and hasn’t looked back since. And with multiple Chivas players in training camp for the national team, June 18th’s Mexico match is shaping up to be a must-see affair for anyone looking to experience the unadulterated passion of Mexican ultras.

Approach Estadio Akron from any direction and you’ll swear that it was birthed by the earth itself, a dormant volcano sprouting from the Jalisco soil. With the circumference of its sloping, concrete base covered in grass that runs up the sides as if chasing the slopes of a mountain, and a 360° canopy roof that evokes a plume of smoke ringing the rim, this is sports architecture as cultural artwork. But the real eruption happens inside, where 48,000 voices transform into La Fortaleza Rojiblanca (The Red-and-White Fortress) into a frothing cauldron of fandom.

SEATING GUIDE

LOWER BOWL

The stadium's double-tiered seating creates that iconic red crater effect when filled with Chivas fans. This is where "La Fortaleza Rojiblanca" (The Red-and-White Fortress) gets its reputation, as the sound bounces off the membrane roof and cascades down onto the pitch. Eastern sections should provide crucial shade during afternoon matches, when the outside temp can reach nearly 100°, while corner sections reportedly deliver the best mix of value and sightline.

UPPER TIER

Estadio Akron is universally praised for focusing on the fan experience at every level. Positioned higher in the crater, these 20,000+ seats amplify the stadium's famous acoustics while the modest overall capacity keeps you relatively close to the action and provides a broadcast-quality sightline of the pitch. The elevated position should offer more universal shade coverage as well, along easy concourse access.

CLUB & BOX SEATS

The stadium’s palcos (luxury boxes) occupy a private zone and feature panoramic 180-degree views, private bathrooms, exclusive elevators, and dedicated parking in an underground garage. But the The Club Chivas section occupies a middle ground, combining premium amenities like private bars and bathrooms without demanding the full palco investment.

AROUND THE STADIUM

Pregame Plan: If you want to skip the stadium parking chaos, head to Tlaquepaque, an artisan district where El Parián's wandering mariachi bands often warm up crowds over tequila and beer. This colonial gem sits 20 minutes from the stadium and offers an authentic Mexican atmosphere, as handcraft shops spill onto cobblestone streets and authentic restaurants serve birria and torta ahogada to fortify you for the big match..

eSports Evolution: For a sporting activity of another kind, check to see if you can get a tour of the Chivas eSports Arena. Early word is that tours will allow you to test your gaming skills on the same equipment the pros use.

Postgame Party: Zona Rosa along Avenida Vallarta keeps the energy flowing with bars and clubs that don't close until dawn. For the real Guadalajara experience, find the street stands selling tejuino, a fermented corn drink that locals swear by and tourists approach with caution. It's pre-Hispanic, mildly alcoholic, and absolutely nothing like anything you'll find at other World Cup venues.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

Mexico is street vendor country, and Guadalajara owns dishes that even Mexico City can't replicate. The torta ahogada, or "drowned sandwich", lives up to its name, submerged in bright red tomato sauce that turns eating into a sport requiring almost as much dexterity as weaving through a loaded box. And only Guadalajara's specific birote salado bread can withstand the drowning without disintegrating, which is why locals claim these sandwiches can't exist anywhere else. Birria also started here, and not as trendy Instagram tacos but rather a proper goat stew served at breakfast for generations. Las 9 Esquinas near the cathedral serves it the traditional way: rich consommé, tender meat that falls apart at a glance, fresh tortillas, and the kind of heat that makes you understand why Guadalajara produces some of Mexico's spiciest football fans.

TRAVEL TIPS

  • Public Transportation: Estadio Akron is notoriously difficult to reach via public transport. The city's Mi Tren light rail doesn't connect directly, and buses require multiple transfers that become nearly impossible on match days. Uber and Didi work well, but you’ll want to book early as surge pricing kicks in hard.
  • Airport Express: Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) sits 20 miles southeast of the stadium. While FIFA promises enhanced transit for 2026, current options are limited to taxis , rideshares, or rental cars. The Chapala Plus bus gets you downtown for 12 pesos, but you'll still need another ride to Zapopan.

FUN FACTS

Mariachi Math: While Guadalajara is considered the birthplace of mariachi, the real spectacle happens during the annual International Mariachi Festival, which typically attracts more than 500 mariachis who perform in concert halls and city streets. The World Cup should bring the mariachis out of the woodwork, though, so don’t be surprised if the Plaza de los Mariachis is worth a visit come June.

Tequila Truth: You're in the heart of tequila country. Jalisco is the primary tequila-producing state in Mexico, though limited areas in four other states can also legally produce it. The town of Tequila itself is an hour away, but Guadalajara offers countless cantinas where you can sample what the blue agave fields produce. By law, tequila must contain between 35% and 55% alcohol content and be made from blue agave grown in these designated regions.
